Painting (A): Miniature painting of Franklin by Duplessis; painted ceramic with copper backing; color painting of Franklin sitting at his desk looking at papers while rubbing his chin; he is wearing a blue coat with gold accents and white ruffled sleeves; the back as turned blue/green from the tarnishing metal; measures 2" x 1 7/8". Joseph Duplessis: French artist; known for the clarity and immediacy of his portraits; another portrait of Benjamin Franklin from 1778 is well-known because it is from this painting that the portrait of Franklin on the One-hundred dollar bill came from. Backing (B): thin wood piece Frame (C): dark wood; the front of the frame is painted gold; has a name at the top with some string residue and a small protruding nail at the bottom; measures 2 3/4" x 3". |
