During World War I the Tippecanoe County Council of Defense acted as the coordinating body for the volunteer war efforts and activities in the county. The council representation extended into the townships with a branch organization in each township. Work of the council included boosting Liberty Loan efforts, sponsoring war savings stamp campaigns, supervising agricultural and gardening efforts, coordinating work of local Red Cross, YMCA, Knights of Columbus, Jewish Relief, etc.; the council also appointed food and fuel administrators for the county. The collection consists of a scrapbook containing newspaper clippings, mostly undated; those with dates are ca. 1917 and 1918. The articles refer to the defense council's work and to local wartime activities in general. Included also are bulletins and correspondence from the Indiana State Council of Defense, 1917. |
