This collection was stored in a sealed expandable "pocket wallet" from 15 June 1934 until 15 June 1984 when it was unsealed and the contents removed by TCHA curatorial staff members. On the outside of the sealed packet was the following: "Dr. Horatio N. Ogden, June 15th 1934. Not to be opened for Fifty Years. To the Battleground Collegiate Society." The packet was placed in TCHA collections 15 June 1934. A listing of the items in order of their removal from the packet is available (see Processing File for collection). The TCHA Accession number assigned to the packet: 3163. Horatio Nelson Ogden was born in Battle Ground, Indiana, 20 August 1843. His parents were Mary (Barnes) and Daniel Ross Ogden. HNO attended the Tippecanoe Battle Ground Institute for at least a portion of his schooling (1858 to 1860 documented in collection). In 1864, at the age of twenty, he enlisted in the 135th Indiana Infantry, Company E, for 100 days service, during which he kept a daily account of his experiences. Prior to his enlistment, he was a miller, as stated on his discharge paper. The collection contains grade reports from The Battle Ground Collegiate Institute, 1868, 1869, and also exhibition programs from 1860, 1861, 1862, 1863, and 1865. According to the obituary for HNO published by the Northwest Indiana Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, 1934, Horatio N. Ogden "offered himself to the North West Indiana Conference in its session at Lafayette, Indiana, in 1869." The collection contains a license to exhort granted to HNO by the Methodist Episcopal Church, Battle Ground, Indiana, circuit in 1867. He was ordained a Deacon (1871) and Elder (1873) of the M.E. Church, North West Indiana Conference. He served a number of area churches; in 1891 he was appointed Presiding Elder for the South Bend District. Ogden received honorary degrees from DePauw University and Upper Iowa University. He continued active service with the Methodist Episcopal Church in various capacities until his retirement in 1912. He and his wife, Julia (Hull), resided in Indianapolis at the time of his death, 18 June 1934. |
