The Lafayette Railroad Relocation Project involved the relocation of the Norfolk Southern and CSX railroads and the removal of 42 highway and street crossings. The project began in 1969 with a series of engineering studies to assess the viability of relocating the railroad tracks that divided the city of Lafayette. In 1974, federal dollars were allocated for an Environmental Impact Study, which was approved by the Federal Highway Administration in 1979. The design phase started in 1979 and ended in 1981 with approval from citizens and governments. There were 161 property owners and businesses directly affected by this move. Kaiser Engineering of Baltimore won the contract for the engineering work. They subcontracted out work to Pflum, Klausmeier, and Wagner, a traffic engineering firm; Stallard and Schuh and Sharp-Mitchell Abstract Company were contracted for title searches and property guarantees; Vester and Associates was hired for surveying work; HC Nutting Company performed soil sampling and geotechnical information; Howard, Needles, Tammen, and Bergendoff completed the bridge design work. Kaiser and HNTB did much of the construction work for the project, along with Atlas Excavating and other subcontractors. Congressional funding was essential for the project, and Mayors Riehle and Heath were regularly in Washington, D.C. to seek federal highway funds to continue the project. The total cost for the five segments of the project was $185 million dollars. In October 1981, the Lafayette Railroad Relocation Project received one of only 19 awards for design excellence from the National Transportation Design Award Program (250 entries). In 1995 the City of Lafayette won the All American City Award. The project ended when relocation concluded in 2002, and the Lafayette Railroad Relocation Office closed in 2003. A pdf of the history of the Lafayette Railroad Relocation Project produced by the Relocation project office staff is attached to this collection guide. Also attached is a detailed identification guide for the photographs and slides in the cd collection (physical items found in series 3). These digital files have also been uploaded to the TCHA server. There are eight series in this collection. Most of the files maintained by the Railroad Relocation Office are in reverse chronological order (most recent documents first in each folder). This is the original order in which the documents were received.
